Jared Rutter,
Ph.D.

PROFESSOR OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND HHMI
INVESTIGATOR, UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
ADVISOR SINCE 2018

I am passionate and enthusiastic about the opportunities that we have as a biomedical research community to make discoveries and then employ those breakthroughs to improve the lives of our fellow humans. I greatly value my work as an academic scientist and collaboration with my colleagues in the discovery process, as well as the partnership with the private sector to translate our discoveries into innovative therapies. RiverVest has an impressive portfolio and a robust strategy for finding those opportunities that are the most promising and supporting their successful development of therapeutic and diagnostic solutions for patients..

Drawn to biology’s least explored areas, Dr. Jared Rutter is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Utah and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Dr. Rutter and his research group study how cells sense and detect energy needs for growth. Understanding the energy-sensing pathways in cells is important in cancer research because these pathways are often overactive in cancer and serve as a good target for new chemotherapy treatments. Specifically, his research is centered upon cellular metabolic homeostasis—the concept that cells must constantly monitor their nutrient, metabolic and hormonal environments and adjust their behavior accordingly.

Dr. Rutter earned a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, Utah, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
